Dentophobia is a fear of dentists. While many patients feel embarrassed to admit they have neglected their oral health due to this fear, it is surprisingly common. We’ve helped numerous patients who suffer from dentophobia, and we do everything we can to accommodate their needs.
We have handpicked dentists for our team who take a gentle and calming approach to dentistry, ensuring our patients are comfortable at all times. We can ensure any patient needs are met. From taking breaks through the appointment to the choice of music in the surgery, we can tailor the appointment to you, making sure you are relaxed and happy.
The key is communication; when you book in, let our Reception team know you suffer from dental anxiety, and we shall book a longer appointment slot. Also, don’t be afraid to speak to the dentist about your preferences. Our team here at Ilchester Dental & Implant Centre are lovely and will strive to ensure your needs are met.
Some of our patients suffer from dental phobia due to past experiences. Dentistry is an ever-progressing field, and therefore, over the years, the standard of care has increased. Some patients have childhood memories of traumatic dental treatments without anaesthesia, but the advancement of dentistry means that this is no longer a method of practice.
Other patients experience phobias as the mouth is a facial feature and can be quite sensitive. As mentioned previously, past trauma can have an impact, and this doesn’t have to pertain to a scary incident with a dentist specifically. Any past experiences with medical procedures that may have caused issues can lead to people not wanting to visit the dentist.
Absolutely, our goal at Ilchester Dental & Implant Centre is always to ‘save’ teeth where possible. No matter the time between dental visits or the treatment needed, we’re happy to see everyone. There is no need for embarrassment; our dentists are experienced and have seen all the different types of issues. Thanks to this high level of experience, they’re well placed to give you tailored advice to help you improve your oral health.
If you’re suffering from anxiety and worry in the lead up to dental appointments – and especially treatments – we’d urge you to discuss this with your Dentist. There’s a long list of ways to help deal with and mitigate these feelings, including sedation, and we’d be more than happy to work through your options with you.
Wherever possible, we will do everything we can to accommodate any requests or requirements for patients during their appointment. All our rooms have speakers, so you can request music that you would prefer. Our surgeries also have TVs so we can display calming images or videos if this is something that helps. Every surgery also has a seat for any guests you may want to bring with you, so you can have someone familiar in the room with you.
All our dentists and nurses here at Ilchester Dental & Implant Centre are genuinely lovely people and will do everything to make you feel comfortable. Every dentist is so easy to talk to and has endless care and compassion for their patients, so feel free to ask them anything you want the answers to. Where they are able, they can stop treatment when you need a break, but if this is not possible, they will let you know beforehand and try to figure out any solutions to ensure you feel as calm as possible.
Our Lounge is designed for comfort. You can sit and wait here as long as you need to after treatment, or before if you want to arrive early. Our lovely Front of House team can check in on you to see how you’re doing, and we have water and Glucose tablets in case you feel a little wobbly afterwards. We can also call anyone you need if you prefer someone to collect you.
If you have any other questions or queries, don’t hesitate to contact us. We are more than happy to help in any way we can. Let us help you overcome your fears and feel safe and secure at your dental appointments!
